How can we support you?

Areas of Specialist Support

At The London Centre, we understand that eating and body image difficulties occur in many different ways. Our specialist clinicians provide evidence-based, compassionate treatment across a broad spectrum – from diagnosable eating disorders to related challenges that may not match a diagnostic label. Whatever you’re experiencing, we can help you.

Anorexia Nervosa

It is estimated that around 1% of females and 0.5% of males in the UK experience anorexia in their lifetime. We provide specialist support for those with restrictive eating, weight loss, or intense fears around food and body image, helping restore both physical health and emotional well-being at your pace.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia affects an estimated 1–2% of people in the UK. Our treatment focuses on breaking the cycle of bingeing and purging, with kindness, structure, and effective therapies.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED)

Binge eating is more common than many people realise. It is estimated to affect around 2-3 % of people, making it one of the most common eating disorders in the UK. We help individuals understand emotional and behavioural triggers and foster self-compassion and healthier eating patterns.

ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)

ARFID can affect both children and adults and is usually linked to sensory sensitivities, fear of eating, or a lack of interest in food. Research suggests it is more common in neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism and ADHD. Our clinicians gently support clients to widen their diet and reduce anxiety around food in a safe and structured way.

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED)

Many people don’t fit neatly into diagnostic boxes. OSFED covers a substantial proportion of eating disorder presentations and is one of the most frequently diagnosed eating disorders, representing a large proportion of referrals in the UK. We recognise that not everyone fits neatly into a diagnostic category, and treatment is always tailored to your unique experiences and recovery goals

Emotional Eating

Many people use food as a way to cope with difficult emotions or stress. We help clients understand the link between emotions and eating, and develop new strategies for managing emotions, stress, and triggers in healthier ways.

Orthorexia

Orthorexia describes a preoccupation with “healthy” or “pure” eating that becomes overly rigid or restrictive, evoking distress if rigid food or exercise rules are not adhered to. Although not formally recognised as a diagnosis, it is thought to affect around 1–7% of people in the UK. We help you find balance and flexibility with food without fear or guilt.

Body Image Therapy and Support

Struggles with body image are widespread. Research suggests that around one in three adults suffer with negative body image at some point in their lives. Our therapists help individuals challenge self-critical thoughts, build confidence, and reconnect with their bodies in a kinder, more authentic way.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

BDD affects around 2% of people and often involves intrusive worries about specific aspects of appearance. Our clinicians provide specialist therapy to help you manage these thoughts, reduce distress, and restore quality of life with understanding and care.

How We Support you

Who Is Eating Disorder Treatment For?

Eating and body image difficulties can affect anyone – regardless of age, gender, background, or circumstance.

At The London Centre, we support individuals who are struggling directly, families or partners seeking guidance, and those who may feel unsure whether their experiences ‘count’ as an eating disorder.
You don’t need to be in crisis or reach a certain level of severity to deserve help.

If thoughts about food, your body, or self-worth are beginning to take up more space in your mind, or affecting how you feel day to day, it’s reason enough to seek support. Even if you’re not in distress, noticing regular patterns or worries around eating or appearance is a good reason to get in touch – early help can make recovery feel more straightforward and less overwhelming.

The Rising Challenge of Eating Disorders

Rising prevalence, growing demand for support, and the need for early intervention.

Over 1.25 million people in the UK are living with an eating disorder, with hospital admissions now at record highs. Rates among young people have risen sharply in recent years, and around one in four affected are male. These conditions can affect anyone, at any age, and carry serious health risks if left untreated.

Nearly half of UK adults also struggle with body image concerns, often fuelled by unrealistic media ideals. This growing crisis highlights the urgent need for early, expert-led care—something The London Centre delivers through compassionate, evidence-based treatment tailored to each individual.

FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions

If your relationship with food, exercise, or your body is causing distress or affecting your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Many people also experience intrusive thoughts or repetitive rumination, ongoing cycles of worry or self-criticism about eating, weight, or appearance. These patterns are very common in eating disorders and can make it harder to focus, relax, or feel in control.

Research shows that repetitive, negative thinking can intensify distress and maintain unhelpful behaviours, so seeking help early can make recovery smoother and more effective. You don’t need to reach crisis point or have a formal diagnosis to reach out – if something doesn’t feel right, that’s reason enough to ask for support.

You can contact us directly. Self-referrals are always welcome. We also accept referrals from GPs, psychiatrists, or other healthcare professionals, but a formal referral isn’t required to see us.

We understand that when someone asks for help, timing really matters. We usually aim to offer an initial appointment within a couple of weeks, depending on your preferences, location, and clinician availability. If you’re able to be flexible, for example, with remote appointments and timings, we can often arrange your first session within just a few days. Our team will respond promptly and do everything possible to get you the right support as soon as you’re ready.

We’ve also recently introduced a small selection of Fast-Track appointments, which can be booked online immediately, offering even quicker access to specialist support when you need it most.

Your first session will be a comprehensive assessment with one of our clinicians. This is a chance to explore your experiences, discuss your goals, and begin shaping a personalised care plan. It’s a collaborative, compassionate process – there’s no pressure or judgement, just a safe space to be heard and understood.

Yes. We provide both in-person treatment at our clinics in Central London, Richmond, Hertford, and Manchester, and online appointments for those who prefer remote care. This flexibility ensures treatment is accessible and fits around your life.

Many private health insurance providers cover part or all of the cost of eating disorder treatment. We currently work with WPA, Cigna, and several smaller insurers, but we’re not currently able to accept AXA, Aviva, Bupa, or Vitality. Our admin team can help you check whether your policy is eligible and provide any documentation your insurer may need. Please contact us if you have any questions about using insurance for your treatment.

Absolutely. Parents, carers, and family members are always welcome to reach out for advice or to explore options. We’re huge advocates of family support and fully recognise how difficult it can be to see a loved one struggle. Please don’t underestimate the impact this can have on you and the wider family network – support is available for you too.

If you have any concerns about someone you care about, or simply want to ask questions, our team is here to listen and help. We also offer ad hoc parent/carer support sessions, providing guidance and reassurance at any stage of your loved one’s journey.
